Te Karaka is a small rural town located 32 kilometers north of Gisborne City along State Highway 2 - in the heart of Te Aitanga a Māhaki iwi. It has Ngā Ariki Kaiputahi, Rongowhakaata, Ngāti Porou, Tūhoe, and Te Whanau a Kai iwi connections.
In 2010 it was decided to close both Waikohu College and Te Karaka Primary, and open a new area school in 2011. Te Karaka Area School began in February 2011 with an approximate roll of 215 comprising year 1-13 students. The new school was planned to be fully situated on the Waikohu College site once extensive re-building had taken place. In the interim the school operated out of the Te Karaka Primary site and some parts of the Waikohu College site.
At the beginning of 2014 Te Karaka Area School's new buildings were completed on the Waikohu College site. The school was officially opened in March 2014, with a pōwhiri. Te Karaka Area School provides quality secondary and primary education for its learners and strives to better the knowledge of its teachers and students as a learning community.
